FAQ

What people often want to know about us.

Do you have a question that’s not answered here? Great!

What is the purpose of WCC?

Founded in 1915, WCC works to advance gender and racial equality by equipping women of color, women experiencing financial hardship, and gender-expansive individuals, with the knowledge, tools, and resources to advocate for the issues that matter most to them. WCC collaborates with partners, policymakers, and advocacy groups to drive real change in economic opportunity, education, healthcare, safety, reproductive justice, and environmental justice.

What is the story behind the name Women Creating Change?

To ensure the name accurately reflected the new mission of our organization, the Women’s City Club moved away from a traditional “club” structure and toward a comprehensive roll-out of programs and policies designed to reach women who have been traditionally underrepresented.

After reviewing a list of over 50 potential names and testing them with a number of stakeholders, we selected Women Creating Change. The name is inclusive, inspiring, action-oriented, and dynamic, keeping women at the center of everything we do. By retaining the same acronym, WCC, the organization honors its 104-year history of policy and advocacy work.

What sets WCC apart from other women-focused organizations?

Women are uniquely positioned to be leaders in their homes, neighborhoods, and communities, but many, primarily women from low-income and immigrant backgrounds, face substantial barriers to participation in civic life.

New York City needs an organization that leads the charge to expand opportunities for women from previously underrepresented communities to take a seat at the table and make their voices heard in civic life.

Why does WCC focus on women rather than girls?

When women have the opportunities and resources to succeed, everyone benefits, including the next generation of changemakers. Representation matters. Our city is stronger when girls grow up seeing women leaders creating change in their communities. For generations, women have led change in their own lives and communities. We also recognize the many organizations supporting civic engagement for girls and look forward to collaborating with them to share resources and support women and gender-expansive individuals at all stages of life.

Does WCC support men and boys?

We do. By supporting women, we also support men and boys indirectly. The sons, partners, husbands, friends, fathers, uncles, and brothers of the women we support all benefit from our investment in underrepresented women.

How can I get involved with and support WCC?

WCC is an inclusive community that welcomes people from all five boroughs of NYC. There are many ways to support our work: invest in our mission, become a supporter, attend our events, sign up for our newsletter, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube, and share your feedback so we can continue serving the women of NYC in meaningful ways.
