Women Creating Change Responds to Mayor’s State of the City Address

(New York, N.Y.)—Sharon Sewell-Fairman, President and CEO of Women Creating Change (WCC), a 110 year nonprofit that works toward a more just and equitable New York City where all women are civically engaged, released the statement below in response to the Mayor’s State of the City.

'WCC is encouraged to see Mayor Adams' vision for New York City's future, as outlined in his State of the City address. Many of the proposed initiatives align with WCC’s key pillars, and we are encouraged by the meaningful steps toward building a more equitable, safe, and sustainable city for all New Yorkers.'

The mayor’s economic justice proposals reflect an important recognition of systemic inequities and the need for targeted solutions. The elimination of city income taxes for low-income New Yorkers, coupled with providing free internet access to public and Section 8 housing residents, will help reduce financial barriers that have long impacted our most vulnerable communities.

WCC acknowledges the potential of the proposed education initiatives to drive meaningful change and advance equity, especially the innovative financial literacy program ensuring every student receives financial education by 2030. The installation of bank branches in schools represents a creative approach to preparing students for future success. By equipping young people with tools for financial success, we can begin to address some of the economic disparities that persist for women and people of color.

The environmental justice initiatives, including expanding park access to 20,000 more New Yorkers and increasing maintenance staff across 100 parks, reflect an understanding that green space access is not just an amenity but a fundamental right. If implemented effectively, these initiatives could significantly benefit historically underserved neighborhoods

While these proposals represent significant progress, their successful implementation will require sustained commitment and resources and community engagement. We look forward to working alongside the administration and our partners to ensure these initiatives deliver meaningful impact for all New Yorkers.
