Wilma Maynard

“A leader who thinks they can do everything all the time is not a leader. You have to be a follower to some degree to be a leader.”

Background:

A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, Wilma embodies what it means to be of service to your community. In her case, that is Bedford Stuyvesant. Her community service began as a result of a tragedy in her neighborhood, when two children were killed by a vehicle. This awful incident prompted her into civic leadership and action–which continues on decades later.

Superpowers:

Activist, Community Leader, Mother

Notable Accomplishments:

  • Served as PTA President of her daughter’s school – P.S. 93 – and organized a multi-day demonstration with parents and teachers to protect kids in her neighborhood, resulting in New York City installing a traffic light at a deadly intersection
  • Helped form Friends of St. Andrews Playground (FOSAP) to improve the condition of local playgrounds
  • Serves on the Board of Directors of her Church, Block Association and the Family Health Center
