Programs and Tours
Our core work is educating members and the public on current public policy issues and then acting on them. From September through June we host educational programs featuring experts on an array of issues. For very complex and timely topics, such as health care reform, we sometimes present a series. Members continue working on pressing issues, such as Charter Revision, in the summer, and often enjoy an educational cruise on New York waters.
Frequent docent-led tours for members and guests offer on-site learning at compelling sites around the City, such as a new small public school in Washington Heights, a controversial landfill on Staten Island and Manhattan’s unique High Line Park.
Special Events
Throughout the year WCC hosts events to help support its mission of education and advocacy. From award galas to art gallery tours, musical performances and theater benefits, our festive gatherings bring members and guests together for a great cause. All are welcome to participate.
Spring 2010 Civic Spirit Awards Celebration
Each year WCC recognizes individuals and/or organizations, typically at our Civic Spirit Awards dinner, for their demonstrated commitment to social responsibility in addressing the civic and social needs of our City. This year’s dinner took place on April 19 at the Cosmopolitan Club in Manhattan. We bestowed our Civic Spirit Award on Linda Fairstein, former chief of the Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office; Robert Morgenthau, former Manhattan district attorney; and Judith Shapiro, former president and professor of anthropology emerita, Barnard College.
Marie S. Neuberger Memorial Lecture
This lecture series, in memory of a longtime WCC president and influential community leader, brings notable speakers to share their perspectives on issues of concern. In June 2009 attendees heard from distinguished WCC member Dr. Jeanette Takamura, dean of Columbia University’s School of Social Work and a member of the Obama transition team for the Department of Health and Human Services.
Fall Theater Benefit
The WCC eagerly anticipated attending The Language Archive on Tuesday, October 19th at 7:30 pm, and most enjoyed the show. A pre-theater dinner at The Glass House Tavern provided good company and food. Thanks to all who helped make this the most successful theater benefit in several years. 2010 Theater Benefit Flier
Last year, members and guests enjoyed a matinee of Nora and Delia Ephron’s play, Love, Loss and What I Wore, followed by dinner at Petit Un Deux Trois, in October 2009.
Special Anniversaries
WCC members are currently planning events to commemorate the organization’s 95th anniversary. The year-long celebration will begin in December 2010; events will include a conference, lecture, special programs and a festive kick-off reception.
