What is Civic Matters

About Civic Matters

Civic Matters was the signature initiative of Women Creating Change (WCC).

Many women face barriers to civic participation due to fundamental societal inequities and oppression.
There is a great potential and need for more civic engagement in New York City. Despite strides that have been made, women – especially women of color – are paid less on the dollar, lag in representation in elected office, and hold fewer leadership positions.

That’s why WCC created the Civic Matters initiative – offering opportunities for New York City women and gender-expansive persons to learn about civics, take action, and connect with others to create change that results in stronger communities.

We believe there is power in knowledge, community, and in our collective voices.

Envision a New York City in which women who face systemic barriers to full participation in community and political decision-making processes) are participating and becoming leaders in civic engagement. A research-based program, Civic Matters will transform the structures and composition of civic participation in New York City.

Our multi-tiered programmatic approach that offers opportunities for underserved women to:

  • Learn about civic engagement and why it matters;
  • Use action-oriented tools and resources;
  • Practice using advocacy skills; and
  • Engage directly in advocacy for themselves.
  • Civic Matters ensures participants are beneficiaries AND collaborators. The program will co-create—with its stakeholders—civic engagement opportunities that connect women with information, education, caregiving support, and leadership opportunities.

Whether you are a newcomer to community involvement or a seasoned advocate with decades of experience, the Hub is designed to cater to your unique position along your journey. It is a resource that can be used at your own pace, on your own terms, and from wherever you are.

The Civic Matters program previously included the Civic Matters Hub which has now transformed into our new Get Involved page that provides you with access to guides, resources and a community of civically engaged women.
