Protect Food Programs June 22nd, 2011

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children – commonly known as “WIC” – plays an essential role in supporting the health and well-being of low-income women and children. WIC not only provides participants with a means to purchase nutritious foods, but also gives participants health referrals and counseling about healthy eating. As a result, WIC has significantly contributed to the improved birth and health outcomes of children and their mothers.

Despite WIC’s documented successes, the House Appropriations Committee recently approved an appropriations bill that would reduce WIC funding by over $650 million. This would cut WIC for between 200,000 to 350,000 people nationwide, and up to 19,500 New Yorkers would lose this critical benefit.
